Material services

The Material Services Unit is responsible for purchasing and storing railway material. It also carries out rail welding, sleeper impregnation and switch assembly.

Welding services

Welding services supply both new and refurbished rails welded to specific lengths. They also provide rails for special trackwork, and special-quality rails. Flash-butt welding using equipment moving on rails is a new VR Track service.

Switch assembly and impregnation

VR Track assembles and supplies between 150 and 200 switches each year. The main products of the impregnation plant are impregnated wooden sleepers and poles.

Purchase and storage

To keep traffic disruption to a minimum, all materials, equipment and spares must be available at all times. This is the responsibility of the purchasing and storage service, which makes the purchases on a centralised basis. An inventory of 8,000 items has been decentralised into four units in different parts of Finland.
